I posted a blog on July 24, 2024, during the Paris Summer Olympic Games entitled “Olympian…at any age!” It was a rehash of something I had written 10 years ago about the passion and commitment that Olympian athletes have as they prepare and compete.
As I watched last evening – downhill skiing, speed skating, pair skating – the words of the announcer struck me in this same vein again. The female partner of the US pair skaters had such a determined look on her face, the announcer said he could read in this look that there was no way she was going to let this competition slip away from them…that you could read determination all over her face.
And once again I asked myself if I was living like an Olympian for Jesus.
I got out the old and edited versions, read and reviewed, and decided that for me, looking at myself and my commitments in light of an Olympic athlete, is a very good challenge. Maybe not for everyone, but perhaps because I have lived surrounded by athletes and athletic competitions for much of my life, or perhaps considering our oldest grandson attends Indiana University and our family got caught up in the IU fever, perhaps listening to both Indiana University students and coaches praise God after their wins…and even the Seattle Seahawks doing the same after their dominant Super Bowl performance and win…perhaps I just think in sports metaphors.
And then I read Jim Denison’s Daily Article about what Lindsey Vonn, US Olympic skier, said after her recent crash on the Italian slopes which took her out of the games. And once again, with the the incredibly exquisite competitions coming out of years and years of commitment and training, i asked myself the hard questions.
I think Lindsey’s words are enough to get us all thinking about life and how we are choosing to live our days, even in retirement, or perhaps, especially in retirement. When you have a minute, read Denison’s perspective.
Check out Denison Forum (denisonforum.org) for February 10…”What Lindsey Vonn wrote after her crash at the Olympics.”
A long list of things to ponder in his words. I hope you enjoy reading…and I hope you feel the spirit of the Olympic games lighting a flame inside of you!
