Beautiful Examples

I was traveling recently, working with mission teams at some churches in another part of the country.  One of my favorite things about my ministry focus is how many amazing people I meet both stateside and in Europe.  I consistently sit in meetings in board rooms or around dinner tables where I enjoy conversation with inspiring guests.  I’m in awe of the talent, gifts, intelligence, and most of all the faith of the people who have committed their lives to the Lord for His purposes.

If I do a quick backward scan of the many people I’ve met with, collaborated with and watched in action, I would say most are somewhat seasoned (let’s say around age 35-50) or highly seasoned (and we’ll put that at 50-60).  But this particular trip gave me such encouragement for what I’m writing about.

At one stop, we worked with a missions leader who could easily have been retired, although somewhat of an early age in their early 60s.  At another, we worked with a couple who actually was retired, albeit at an early age because it was financially possible for them, but retired nonetheless.  Very intentionally they had looked at their future and after a time of prayer and much conversation, they decided together to commit these next years to working at their church.  I actually have no idea if there is any salary involved, or if it is totally volunteer – I did not ask – but what captivated me was their passion to serve.  They are living out what this blog is advocating – making the most of your retirement for God’s purposes.

He has gone from investment banking to running the church operations.  She has gone from teaching to hosting gap year students who spend a year after college graduation experiencing life in ministry.  They also continue their personal ministry and have an open door policy at their home to welcome any and all who want to gather for any and all purposes. I was simply in awe of their spirit of generosity!

I don’t see it as a huge challenge to take this step – leave professional careers behind and step into the world of ministry for the retirement season.  If God calls, He has purpose in it for Him and for us.  Why would we choose something less?  Why wouldn’t we choose to give eternal worth to all we are doing?  Why wouldn’t we spend our days sharing the Gospel message and bringing life to so many who are spiritually dying?

I am so grateful for the example of many who have gone before in setting a beautiful example of intentionally choosing to live a retirement lifestyle that offers itself up to the Lord for His purposes.  May there by more and more of God’s people making this choice and may God’s army here on earth be filled to overflowing with our energy, passion, and wisdom.
